Don’t Make These Mistakes When Twitter Marketing

Twitter now represents a huge pool of potential customers for online marketers. If you are going to use Twitter for marketing, however, be sure to not make the errors we’ll be talking about below.

Avoid the first newbie mistake which is to get too personal with the people who are following you. While on one hand you’re trying to be like everyone else with your tweets, you still want to separate your business from your fun time. Whatever you choose for your subject matter, make sure you stay on subject and keep your personal life out of it. The people following you won’t have patience for what food you like or don’t like, or about how much you drank last night. They only want to hear about how you can help them, maybe with a new product you’re promoting. You can let your hair down and be funny or laid back, but you should keep it within the realm of the niche you’ve focused on. Going back to our SEO example, let’s say you find a funny video that talks about the search engines; you should go ahead and share it with your followers. While you’re not solving any of their problems, per se, you are giving them something fun which will give you a reputation for someone who’s fun and interesting. You’re still able to entertain and send out tweets that show your personality, but you’re not deviating from your subject matter. You can always maintain another Twitter account where you share your personal updates, which would be a completely different experience and aim. Another simple mistake that Twitter marketers make is they get scared that their followers may quit them if they aren’t polite enough. This leads to what I would call as the “Twitter Politeness Syndrome”. This is where you think that tweeting too many times will be rude or make your followers to hate you. Actually, you have to do the opposite of that. If you only send out a tweet here and there, you will never get seen since you’ll be competing again loads of other tweets. And that’s how it’s done. Your followers aren’t just following you, but they’re following a bunch of other people too. Now if you just tweet them once a day, won’t your tweet simply get lost in the crowd? Use your head and tweet as often as you can without looking like a spammer.

Being too closed and reserved on Twitter is a mistake because this site is a social networking platform. If you really want to get to know people, you’ll have to approach them as you would someone on the street and just be informal. This really isn’t difficult because there are a number of ways you can interact with people here. You are able to give people what they need to succeed, ask questions of them, and you can just become one of the crowd.

In summary, Twitter marketing isn’t very difficult if you work towards avoiding such common mistakes.
